13 lakh marooned in north, hill dists

Around 13 lakh people of the country’s north, northeastern and hill regions have been stranded in flooded areas amid heavy downpour and onrush of water from upstream. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said the situation may deteriorate today in Netrokona, Sunamganj, Sylhet, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Jamalpur and Gaibandha. All major rivers may continue to swell further in the next 72 hours, while the Jamuna in Bogura’s Sariakandi may flow well over the safe level today, officials said.
