Take responsibility for accidents on the rivers
This sounds all too familiar and frustrating The horrendous ferry fire on Friday in Jhalakathi once again laid bare the tremendous lack of safety in Bangladesh’s water transit system.
It would be, in fact, a misstatement to say that the incident revealed anything, as it is an open secret that serious accidents on the waterways happen with unacceptable regularities. At least 41 people were incinerated on the Barguna-bound ferry on the Sugandha River.
As many as 36 of the passengers were burned so badly that relatives could not identify the charred bodies.
