OP-ED: Rules for some. Bombs for others

America and Europe are ‘deeply concerned’ over Gaza. All are guardians of the ‘rules-based international order.’ Whose order? Whose rules?
It has been a strange few days. Neither China nor Russia have been cast as the villain. Instead, Israel and America are in the firing line, figuratively speaking, considering it’s their bombs that are maiming and killing journalists and civilians on the shores of the Eastern Mediterranean. 


Washington has helped prolong the agony. It has exercised its veto at the UN Security Council, which happens to be under the presidency of China (calling for an immediate ceasefire from the off). Europe, which created the mess a century ago, has been an inconsequential bystander.
