The proposed third terminal project at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka, aimed at significantly increasing the airport's passenger and cargo capacity, is going on in full swing.Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had inaugurated the much-awaited construction work of the Tk21,300 crore project in 2019.According to sources at the Civil Aviation Authority Bangladesh (CAAB), the project made about 14% progress till April 30 and one-third of the work is set to be completed by June.These photos taken on May 2, 2021, by Dhaka Tribune's Chief Photographer Syed Zakir Hossain share a glimpse into the construction work of the new international passenger terminal building that will have a floor area of roughly 2.25 million square feet. The existing two terminals have a space of around one million square feet together.On completion of the project, the airports annual passenger handling capacity will jump to 20 million from the current eight million, and cargo capacity from 200,000 tons to 500,000 tons.As per the initial plan, the project is scheduled to be completed by June 2023.Hundreds of workers, local and foreign engineers and consultants are contributing to the project amid the pandemic. The construction site has separate accommodation for 400 workers as well as quarantine and medical facilities for them.
